As an Underwriter, you’ll be responsible for underwriting, processing, and approving mortgage applications. Success in this role depends on your ability to build strong relationships with our partner Mortgage Brokers while ensuring service, volume, asset quality and profitability targets are met. The role requires you to communicate in a professional and timely manner, and to maintain discretion always. Some conversations are harder than others, and you can navigate the good and the bad with integrity and positivity.

What you will be responsible for:

  • Deliver timely mortgage solutions, while applying a high degree of accuracy and quality to the file during the underwriting process.
  • Review mortgage applications, supporting documentation and negotiate terms with the mortgage broker while mitigating risks (if any), decision with accuracy and expedience
  • Document decision; whether the decision be an approval or decline; defend soundly
  • Ensure that approved deals close as scheduled and as efficiently as possible by following up on outstanding conditions/documents and ensuring compliance with established guidelines.
  • Provide the highest level of internal and external customer service while fielding mortgage broker inquiries and building strong broker relationships.
  • Provide suggestions to aid in the continuous improvement of the business

 

The work experience, skills, education that you bring:

 

Qualifications:

  • Post-secondary education preferred

 

Work experience:

  • Previous underwriting experience of at least 2 years required
  • Completion of underwriting course or mortgage agent course preferred
  • Knowledge of Legislation (e.g. Mortgage Act) regarding risk related mortgage law required

 

Skills & Abilities:

  • Proficiency in Microsoft applications is required; capacity to quickly learn new technologies/systems required
  • Ability to understand financial statements and assess financial viability required
