Undergraduate Engineering Lab Technologist

 

Description:

  • This position requires a minimum of a three-year Engineering Technologist diploma or equivalent with a strong emphasis in electronics and computing, and a minimum of 3 years’ work experience in a similar field.

  • Continuous learning through on-the-job training, workshops, seminars, and self-study are expected to keep abreast of developments and upgrades in the related areas of laboratory equipment, computer applications, and health and safety.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills for interacting professionally with people with diverse backgrounds and needs as well as writing reports and proposals.

  • Knowledge of good laboratory practices (documentation, housekeeping, safety, etc.)

  • Knowledge and skills to install, operate and maintain, troubleshoot and repair various lab equipment and workshop tools.

  • Knowledge of electrical and electronics concepts in laboratory applications

  • Comprehensive knowledge of analogue and digital electronics

  • Familiarity with computer, network hardware, and peripherals

  • Knowledge of computing hardware and software including personal computers, web technologies and peripheral devices

  • Broad knowledge of current operating systems (Microsoft Windows, MacOS) and applications used in an educational and office environment

  • Analytical, creative, and problem-solving skills

  • Strong organizational and time management skills

  • Ability to work effectively independently and as part of a team

  • Ability to work efficiently with numerous interruptions as well as the ability to juggle tasks according to changing and competing priorities

  • Ability to work in a safe and diligent fashion, adhering to University policies and procedures as well as regulations defined in the Occupational Health and Safety Act

  • Health and safety knowledge and training to handle emergencies (e.g. WHMIS, Fire Extinguisher, First Aid or related training)

  • Knowledge and skills can be gained on the job with proficiency reached within the first 2 years of the role.

    3. Is it necessary in this position to oversee the work, or to instruct other staff? If so, what does this involve?

    The incumbent does not schedule, assign or monitor the workflow of other employees but will provide technical support, guidance and advice to staff, faculty, and students on the safe use of equipment housed within the department. The incumbent will have direct contact with the University’s Environmental Health and Safety Department in matters related to safe chemical storage, waste disposal and other safety issues.

    The incumbent will also aid and advise on the safe use of laboratory equipment to teaching assistants that are hired for laboratory specific courses, which includes demonstrating the technical aspects of the equipment design, operation, and maintenance.
