Senior Engineer

 

Description:

The Human Factors Engineering and Work Methods team develop and maintain >300 work procedures and tool
requirements for Line and Substation electrical trade work, perform specialized safety risk assessments, and provide safety,
workability, and maintainability input to asset investments. We have an opportunity for a Senior Engineer to participate in a
range of multidisciplinary, cross-organizational safety related work to improve worker safety at BC Hydro.

**Specific duties include:
 

  • Develop or update energized (including isolation, grounding and bonding) work methods and related work practices,

policies and standards for work on the BC Hydro power system in accordance with internal established processes and
practices, regulatory requirements, and industry best practices.
 

  • Provide expert advice and counsel within BC Hydro and externally regarding the investigation of emergent issues and

application of new and/or specialized work methods relating to energized work on the BC Hydro power system.
 

  • Perform safety risk assessments of a broad range and technical nature for complex, high risk, and emergent safety issues.

 

  • Lead or support safety improvement projects including assessing risks and recommending sound engineering solutions

and methods to mitigate safety concerns while engaging all lines of business that may be impacted by proposed solutions
to manage negative business impacts.
 

  • With expert knowledge of the field, coordinate development, evaluate, and implement new techniques or tools and

equipment for work on the BC Hydro power system.
 

  • Develop and maintain effective professional relationships with internal and external stakeholders (including senior

management) across the line of business and regulators to determine relative priorities, assess the impact of work on
others and resolve issues of concern.
 

  • Act as Owners Engineer to review and accept new work procedures and tool requirements developed by external

engineering service providers/contractors into BC Hydro.
 

  • Use risk analysis and assessment tools (i.e. JHA, Bow-Tie, HAZOP, FMEA, FTA/ETA, etc.) to develop hazard and barrier

models, evaluate effectiveness of mitigation controls, review incident data to support safety projects and discussions with
subject matter experts and senior management on risk based decisions.
 

  • Proactively identify and resolve safety issues related to energized work on the power system.

 

  • Manage projects of medium to high complexity including planning and managing resources and coordinating work to

ensure that commitments are met.
 

  • Facilitate meetings / discussions to address safety concerns and / or provide instructions, advice and technical guidance

to other engineers and technical support staff.

 

  • Review work of the team and of consultants and contractors to ensure accuracy, achievement of required results, and

adherence to accepted engineering and safety practices.
