Description:
Reporting to the Manager, Electrical Engineering, the Senior Electrical Engineer plays a pivotal role within the Cenovus Canadian Thermal and Conventional Heavy Oil team, specializing in the management of electrical systems. This role involves overseeing equipment and loads operating within a voltage range of 24V to 260kV, including UPS, motors, drives, switchgear, distribution systems, substations, transmission facilities, and co-generation.
Responsibilities:
- Develop safe work procedures, review isolation and switching orders, and act as the subject matter expert for the CVE Electrical Safety Program.
- Troubleshoot failures and prepare root cause analysis reports.
- Participate in risk assessments.
- Undertake field trips for commissioning and testing when required.
- Develop operational plans to reliably operate in off-normal conditions.
- Develop specifications, guidelines, standards, and best practices for electrical systems.
- Answer RFI's and provide guidance for the application of standard detail drawings and specifications for electrical designs.
- Assist in electrical system planning and load forecasting aligned with growth projections, including developing system studies and plans.
- Manage reporting of electrical loading and generation at facilities.
- Participate in electrical design reviews.
- Maintain a working knowledge of electrical systems.
- Sign and stamp electrical drawings and records.
- Aid operations with electrical regulatory compliance.
- Assist in preparing audit information for regulators.
- Update the electrical GIS models to support system planning, design, and operations.
- Create opportunity assessments and business cases for electrical projects.
- Draft project scope documents and technical scopes of work for electrical projects.
- Merge and update ETAP models for power system construction, long-term planning, and identifying electrical hazards.
- Identify and develop opportunities for innovation, efficiency enhancement, and cost reduction.
- Foster key relationships between various Cenovus operational, maintenance, and engineering teams.
- Communicate effectively with support teams.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
- A bachelor’s degree in mechanical electrical engineering is required
- Professional Engineer designation that is recognized by APEGA/APEGS is required
- A Minimum of 8 year’s related specifically to specializing in the management of electrical systems
- Familiarity with ETAP engineering software is required
- Knowledgeable about Alberta Safety Codes Act, the Canadian Electrical Code Part 1, the Code for Electrical Installations at Oil and Gas Facilities, and the Alberta Electrical Utility Code is required
- Proficiency in desktop tools, such as Microsoft Suite and Adobe Acrobat.
- Demonstrated knowledge in protection and control systems.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Capable of managing multiple projects, prioritizing, and coordinating tasks efficiently with excellent time management skills.
- Design experience with 25kV and greater systems would be an asset.
- Previous experience in SAGD facility operations would be a benefit.
