Schulich Studio Technician

 

Description:

The Studio Technician will ensure that the room, inventory, and equipment for the specific course is prepared for classes, they will support student experiential learning and online content.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Support a specific first-year common core course by working with the Studio Manager and Course Coordinator to provide active learning support for the students.
  • Work with the Academic Faculty Course Coordinator, updating lab sheets from the coordinator and ensuring that experiments are prepared in advance.
  • Create a standard operating procedure for the lab, including ensuring that inventory is available, lab kits are created in non-teaching time periods.
  • Maintenance and inventory of laboratory equipment for the respective course, including scheduling any required maintenance during non-instructional time periods.
  • Coordinate the necessary inventory for the lab, testing and maintaining lab equipment, and maintaining the rooms/space functionality.
  • Provide in-class / in-lab support for active learning in the Schulich Studio which will match the class schedule.
  • Collaborate with technical services and Tech Manager, to support necessary maintenance for classes.
  • Provide training to support Academic Faculty with teaching & learning, specifically demonstrating the functionality of technical equipment in classrooms.
  • Provide updates about what needs to be repaired or replaced, for classrooms to remain functional for teaching.
  • Collaborate with Technical Manager for task delegation and training of Internship.
  • Participate in SSE committees and/or department discussion related to technology and learning spaces and contribute to project renovations for learning spaces.
  • Support the creation of new design projects for courses.
  • Engage in the development of new and updating of existing course laboratory experiences.
  • Provide input in the planning, development, and monitoring of new experiments in laboratories and undergraduate projects.
  • Support activities in the Schulich School of Engineering Maker Spaces.
  • Support engineering teams and clubs engineering design and construction.
  • Set up of equipment and experiments in the engineering undergraduate laboratories.
  • Provide practical instruction in engineering undergraduate laboratories and projects.
  • Acquire, maintain, upgrade, or replace laboratory equipment to ensure that equipment is in working order and setup prior to scheduled laboratories.
  • Maintain efficient, safe, well-organized laboratories and projects for students.
  • Order and inventory of laboratory materials and supplies.
  • Schedule and coordinate inventory and disposal of capital equipment.
  • Maintain knowledge of current and future technical trends and developments within industry and apply the knowledge as appropriate.
  • Configure, maintain, and operate specialized area equipment including testing systems and instruments; laboratory apparatus; and associated infrastructure including: computer operations, electronics, data acquisition systems, computer control for laboratory systems.
  • Aptitude and ability to operate appropriate area tools and equipment.
  • Ensure compliance with safety, fire, and health regulations in the laboratories.
  • Maintain and update laboratory hazard assessments and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) manuals on a regular basis.
