Description:
Reporting to the Centrally Assigned Principals for Safe Schools, the School Based
Safety Monitor (SBSM) will be responsible for assisting school administrators, staff
and students in establishing positive school climates by implementing caring and safe
school plans and providing a direct intervention role that supports caring and safe
schools. The candidate will be assigned to identified schools as needed by any of the
Centrally Assigned Principals in Safe Schools.
Summary of Duties:
➢ Monitor halls, cafeterias, pool areas, basements, washrooms, exterior of school etc
for the presence of any intruder or any activity which places the safety of students,
staff or visitors at risk;
➢ Assist school administration, staff and students to uphold the school’s code of
conduct and the TDSB Caring and Safe Schools Policy;
➢ Provide assistance/direction to visitors to the school;
➢ Identify trespassers and report to administration;
➢ Assist school administration with serious and routine incidents and security matters;
➢ Under the direction of school administration liaise with police when serious
incidents and security matters arise;
➢ Resolve minor disputes between students by encouraging positive communications
and working to minimize conflicts;
➢ Act as a liaison between students and school administrators;
➢ Assist school administrators with planning and monitoring to ensure a safe,
accepting and welcoming school climate at school events; and
➢ Other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
➢ Secondary School Diploma with six months related experience working with
adolescents in education or community environment, or an equivalent combination
of education and experience;
➢ Proven ability to communicate effectively with students, staff, parents/guardians,
community members and visitors to the school;
➢ Proven ability to deal with difficult situations and to take appropriate action in stressful
or emergency situations according to Board policies and procedures;
➢ Familiarity with School operations (Secondary, Middle Schools and/or Junior High
Schools) and adolescent development;
➢ Knowledge of related Board policies (e.g., Safe Schools, Equity, Neglect, Child
Abuse, etc.) and procedures (e.g. Suspension, Expulsion, Trespass to Warning,
Code of Conduct, Appropriate Dress etc);
➢ Familiarity with school rules and procedures;
➢ Proven experience following directions, policies and procedures in an appropriate
and timely manner; and
➢ Proven experience dealing with confidential information in a circumspect manner.
➢ Current First Aid and CPR Certification is an asset
➢ Must be able to spend most of shift walking/standing through school building and
grounds.
➢ Incumbent(s) will be assigned to schools on a as needed basis
