Research Assistant

 

Description:

The incumbent will play a key role in supporting the research projects conducted at the Determinants of Child Development Lab, including conducting literature reviews, coding tasks and entering data. They will also perform tasks and routines to support the operations of the Determinants of Child Development Lab. Strong communication, organizational, analytical and problem-solving skills are critical.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Data monitoring, entry, cleaning, scoring, and organizing in SPSS and Microsoft Excel.
  • Creation of data coding manuals for ease of exploring data.
  • Extract data elements from participant records- paper and electronic.
  • Assist with abstract review, data extraction, and data entry for meta-analytic projects.
  • Work closely with the Principal Investigator and other research staff in areas of protocol development and management of research projects.
  • Support multiple research projects by providing knowledge, skills and on-the-job training to new lab members (more relevant for lab manager than general RA).
  • Maintain accurate data collection, organization and recording.
  • Maintain accurate administration of research protocols.
  • Perform other related duties as required and assigned.

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • A BA or BSc in Psychology, social sciences, health sciences or a related discipline.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work well both independently and as part of a highly collaborative team.
  • Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision.
  • Strong organizational skills, good judgment, and concern for detail and accuracy.
  • Excellent time management skills including an ability to prioritize work, to work under pressure, and to meet deadlines.
  • Computer literacy and ease with learning new software programs.
  • Proven experience using MS Office programs (including Word, Excel, and Outlook).
  • Previous experience as a research assistant in a social sciences or related discipline.
  • General knowledge of developmental psychopathology.
  • Experience conducting literature searches.
  • Experience reading and interpreting the methods and results sections of academic research papers.
  • Experience with systematic reviews.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including an ability to work in a team environment with lab associates.
  • Ability to follow specific directions and research protocols.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with undergraduate students, graduates students, research participants and professors.
  • High degree of familiarity with SPSS and/or R an asset.
  • Proficiency with computer software for writing and presentations, databases, database design, and electronic medical record programs.
