We are currently seeking a Mechanical Engineer to join our Remote Handling (RH) Group to provide engineering design, analysis, and support for site-wide RH systems. In general, the RH Group at TRIUMF is responsible for the design, fabrication, operation, and maintenance of equipment used to transport and service items located in radioactive areas, to prevent personnel from receiving radiation dose. Primary operational responsibilities will include support for the facilities at TRIUMF in which Targets and associated systems are remotely handled. This role would focus on maintenance and improvement of legacy equipment, and development of innovative new equipment and procedures to support site-wide RH initiatives, with the goal of increased safety and reliability. The work will be comprised of technical leadership, design and prototyping, coordination of tasks, and hands-on work. Much of the work will be within a small, focused group of technical staff, but this role also involves interfacing with a diverse group of people such as physicists, engineers, tradespeople, and project managers. RESPONSIBILITIES: Initiate and manage engineering projects of moderate scope and budget, typically with < 1 year timeline – these projects are aimed at improving site-wide RH systems in alignment with the group’s primary mandates of reducing radiation exposure to personnel and increasing operational efficiency Participates in the oversight and co-ordination of conceptual design, detailed design, procurement/fabrication, installation, commissioning, and operation of RH equipment Ownership, maintenance, and ongoing improvement of existing RH systems at TRIUMF Contributes to the establishment of engineering requirements for components and systems and generating innovative concepts to solve unique challenges Simulation and analysis (e.g. stress, thermal, fluids) Failure analysis and reliability engineering (Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis, Root Cause Analysis) Documentation specific to projects: as-built drawings, schematics, design notes, engineering notes, presentations, Engineering Change Orders (ECOs), and design reviews Hands-on work or “floor engineering” for maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of equipment where RH techniques are employed KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS: As our ideal candidate, you possess the following skills, traits, and experience: A solid mechanical engineering background, ideally in a research and development or industrial facility A strong aptitude for working with and providing basic engineering guidance to a diverse team of individuals from multiple divisions Strong project management, planning, and organizational skills Excellent communication skills, written and oral Failure analysis tools and methods Understanding of industrial safety Experience with CAD design of dynamic systems with multiple subassemblies and custom components using SolidWorks (or similar CAD environment) Experience with ANSYS or a similar simulation environment, specifically for static and dynamic mechanical analysis (heat transfer and fluid flow an asset) Hands-on experience with mechanical assembly and prototyping A desire to learn new things within and outside your area of expertise The ability to provide and receive critical feedback on designs
