Description:

The Programs Assistant is an ideal position for an individual who enjoys working with youth, and wants to gain more experience in public engagement, education, and museums. The qathet Museum and Archives Society (qMAS) is an organization that continuously seeks to provide its visitors and the community with fun and engaging activities. The Programs Assistant will work with the public, assisting with the development and delivery of museum programs throughout the summer months.

Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Assist with the delivery of school programs, public programs and special events, for a diverse variety of age groups and backgrounds, with professionalism and enthusiasm, with support from the organizations two Assistant Curators. Includes assisting in the delivery of museum summer camps for youth.
  • Assist with the development of museum programs and in the creation of engaging educational activities relating to qMAS’ collections.
  • Engage visitors in the history and culture of the qathet Regional District, through interpretation of the qMAs’ exhibits and collections.
  • Curate educational content relating to museum programs and collections for digital platforms, including the museum website and social media.
  • Assist the Assistant Curators in the preparation of promotional and educational materials including: historical tour brochures, school brochures, website updates and a portable display board for events.
  • Evaluate and report on program performances to ensure goals and objectives are being achieved.
  • Cover the front desk reception area when required, and not assisting with program delivery, including opening and closing procedures, welcoming and greeting visitors, maintaining visitation records, processing sales and admissions, responding to visitor inquiries, managing phone lines, assisting in gift shop operations, and processing daily cash.

Qualifications:

  • Expressed interest in the fields of education, museum studies, public programming, and heritage, cultural, educational, or non-profit settings.
  • Ideal candidates have taken courses in relevant disciplines (i.e. History, Museum Studies, Anthropology, Archaeology, Tourism, and/or Education)
  • Confidence with time management, memorization, organization, and problem solving.
  • Experience working effectively as a part of a team or independently.
  • Experience developing and/or delivering educational programs is considered an asset
  • Demonstrated skills in customer service and interacting with a range of audiences
  • Demonstrated interpersonal and English verbal and written communication skills
  • Confident presentation and public speaking skills.
  • General computer literacy and the ability to learn new skills, including but not limited to: Microsoft Office Suite, Google programs, web-based software, and collection databases (Past Perfect)
  • Clear Criminal Background Check
  • Valid First Aid Certification is considered an asset
