Production Engineer

 

Description:

Reporting to the Manager, Operations Engineering – Heavy Oil, the Production Engineer will be responsible for production engineering activities for our heavy oil assets. The successful candidate will work closely with field operations staff to optimize and manage day-to-day production, prepare and execute workover programs, create and execute optimization capital and production budgets, facility and pipeline design and operation, reservoir efficiency, equipment longevity, and operating costs.

 

Responsibilities

Duties include the following, but are not limited to:

  • Manage day-to-day production operations; monitor and report area and individual well performance versus budget;
  • Support Obsidian Energy safety and environmental practices;
  • Justify and evaluate economics on routine and non-routine workovers and well interventions; prepare well servicing programs for all required workovers; optimize design of artificial lift systems with the aim of reducing downhole OPEX and increasing runtime;
  • Work closely with the field operations and well servicing group to manage service rig and rod rig activity;
  • Manage and track all area optimization capital; ensure all projects are justified and exceed economic hurdles; raise and accrue monthly optimization capital AFEs for area;
  • Work with operations and facilities engineers to optimize and debottleneck facilities and pipeline networks; scope, estimate and execute RIK and MOC facility projects;
  • Lead area measurement initiatives; work with the measurement team, operations, and production accounting to ensure area compliance;
  • Manage area inactive well compliance program; review inactive wells and work with abandonment team to abandon inactive wells as required;
  • Work with field staff to effectively manage and lower operating costs; perform detailed analytics on OPEX major and minor categories to identify cost reduction opportunities;
  • Provide engineering support to field staff to minimize well downtime and optimize well production;
  • Maintain monthly base forecast and report on variances; and
  • Build and maintain effective relationships with service providers and government agencies.

 

Qualifications

  • Registered Professional Member with APEGA
  • 4+ years as a Production Engineer with heavy oil experience
  • Knowledge of downhole failure mechanisms and methods of mitigating failures
  • Experience with drilling, completions, and production operations
  • Analytical skills required to evaluate asset performance and identify de-bottlenecking, cost reduction or volume adding opportunities
  • Waterflood or Polymerflood experience would be an asset
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Excel, GeoScout, ValNav, ProdView, WellView, and Verdazo
  • Ability to travel to various field locations and must have a valid driver’s license
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills
  • Work well independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team
  • Ability to manage time and produce results under tight deadlines
