Position Overview

The Department of Physiology & Pharmacology in the Cumming School of Medicine nvites applications for a Manager, IICD. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

This position reports to the Director, Programs & Business, IICD.

Infections, inflammation and chronic disease are great strengths in research at the University of Calgary. As such, Infections, Inflammation and Chronic Disease in the Changing Environment (IICD) has been identified as one of the six strategic research themes at the University of Calgary within the "Eyes High" strategy. In moving forward with the IICD theme, untangling the many and complex interactions behind inflammation, infections and the environment that may lead to chronic disease is a major undertaking that requires a rigorous multidisciplinary approach. The IICD is seeking a manager for the Containment level three (CL3) facility, with capacity for in vitro and in vivo research aimed at understanding the mechanisms by which level three pathogens cause chronic disease.

The Manager, IICD will be an expert in biocontainment, have knowledge and training in animal husbandry and be responsible for planning, organizing, executing and evaluating the operations of the IICD CL3 facility. The individual will be required to stay up-to-date with biocontainment, animal science and analytical protocols and technologies.


Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Management:
    • With IICD management, implement the strategic vision and advise on operations and the technical aspects for projects pertaining to level-3 biocontainment
    • Using scientific judgement, technical and operational expertise engage with the Directors, EHS and IACUC for development of new applications and standard procedures for the level-3 biocontainment program, requiring complex problem solving
    • Manage hiring, training, disciplining, evaluating, etc of CL3 staff including technical staff
    • Training of IICD researchers on the aspects of the level-3 biocontainment facility, associated equipment and software, while maintaining a clean and safe area
    • Responsible to comply and liaise with IACUC and EHS to ensure appropriate level-3 containment environment, user standard operating procedures d and training of individuals conducting work in the facility, in compliance with federal, provincial and local authorities (ie: PHAC, etc), which requires complex problem solving
    • Responsible to maintain standards of animal care that are in compliance with Canadian Council of Animal Care (CCAC) regulations and policies
    • Monitor and report IICD CL3 schedules and assist in making decisions that may impact the schedule of large projects
  • Technical:
    • Responsible for managing daily maintenance of the IICD CL3 facility
    • Responsible for managing animal husbandry for the CL3 animal program
    • Apply knowledge and technical skills to assist in experimental design, along with conducting, managing and providing reports for use in scholarly publications including pilot and feasibility studies for CL3 research
    • Responsible for managing reliable and safe operation of level-3 biocontainment related equipment including trouble-shooting problems with the infrastructure and equipment
    • Other tasks as assigned by IICD management
  • Administration & General:
    • Successful completion and reporting of level-3 biocontainment projects to stakeholders from the conception stage through the submission of all contract deliverables and project closure
    • Responsible for managing and reporting the financial aspects of the level-3 biocontainment facility through tracking spending and assisting the IICD Director Programs & Business in maximizing cost effectiveness for IICD level-3 biocontainment activities when required
    • Assist the IICD Director Programs & Business with high level funding and research strategies through participating in related sessions
    • Work with the IICD Director Programs & Business to identify and pursue national and international research and development opportunities
    • Establishes and maintains effective, productive relationships with staff, peers, immediate supervisor and senior management and with the campus community
