The key responsibility of the Manager would be to provide consultation, advice, analysis, and guidance on Canadian income taxation implications to policyholders and clients of products sold by the Canadian division (Individual Customer (IC) and Group Customer (GC) business areas). The accountabilities of the position are outlined below:
What you will do
- Be the initial contact for requests for support from IC (Individual Life, Living Benefits, Wealth Management) and certain GC product areas, marketing, client services, compliance, and tax reporting areas
- Monitor, analyze, interpret, and explain the impact on the taxation of our products and policyholders/clients arising from new or revised administrative positions of the CRA or RQ, proposed or actual changes to tax legislation, changes to tax treaties and tax court decisions
- Provide research for and consulting to Wealth and Insurance Solutions business areas on complex scenarios and short and longer-term projects and business initiatives ensuring that products are designed to be tax effective for the policyholder/client and that the existing legislation, required tax administration and reporting requirements, and any associated risks are identified and understood by the business
- Review and provide feedback with respect to the income tax aspects of marketing articles and concepts, contract wording, applications, forms, information folder/simplified prospectus, statements, product guides as well as illustrations and administration systems
- Leadership including aptitude to review and provide input to other team members research and build relationships with business partners
- Assist compliance, legal or market conduct staff with taxation issues and questions that affect many polices, or that involve complex cases
- Respond to questions asked by the strategic business units related to product development, marketing, administration, and tax reporting through a review of tax legislation, regulations, technical interpretations, court cases, and administrative positions
What you will bring
- CPA or equivalent experience
- 5+ years of related experience
- Deep knowledge of insurance and wealth products and their taxation; including but not limited to; individual life insurance, living benefits, annuities, segregated funds, mutual funds – non registered and registered products (RRSP, RRIF, RPP, TFSA)
- Knowledge of both general tax principles as well as the specific tax rules applicable to life insurance and wealth products
- Proven strong research skills including the ability to interpret, apply and articulate complex legislation to general or fact-based situations
- Strong analytical, judgement, problem-solving skills including ability to demonstrate attention to detail and to ask the right questions in determining the actual problem before identifying a solution
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Proven leadership and ability to work in a team environment and to develop relationships with both internal team members and external business areas and partners
- Ability to manage multiple tasks, multiple priorities, and work independently
- Current environment requires adaptability to change, and the ability to apply knowledge to new and complex products/features that are not always explicitly contemplated in tax legislation
