In accordance with the Mission, Vision and Values, and strategic directions of Provincial Health Services Authority patient safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone at PHSA, and as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position. The Maintenance Power Engineer 3rd Class operates, maintains, repairs and modifies elements, components and appliances associated with the steam distribution, steam condensate, hot water heating, heating ventilation and air conditioning, medical air/vacuum, and mechanical power generation systems at a 3rd Class Power Engineer’s level in conformance with accepted regulatory codes, Worksafe BC regulations and established Hospital policies and procedures. This position also provides vacation and sickness relief for the in Steam Generation Plant as required.
What you’ll do
Liaises with the Steam and Mechanical Systems Supervisor to receive direction on operational strategies and maintenance tasks associated with the following building systems; steam distribution, steam condensate, hot water heating, heating ventilation and air conditioning(HVAC), medical air/vacuum, and mechanical power generation systems.
Determines necessary materials, tools and equipment required to perform each task. Refers to blueprints and shop drawings to minimize operating impacts in patient care areas prior to any work start. Consults with end users when requiring to access and work in any patient care areas. Ensures all work assignments are executed in conformance with current regulatory codes, Worksafe BC regulations and established Hospital standards while maintaining a clean work space.
Monitors and adjusts Heating, Ventilation and Air conditioning building systems by operating a variety of mechanical , pneumatic and/or electronic control systems and performing such tasks as altering systems operating parameters and schedules; repairs and calibrates various system components and maintains appropriate activity logs.
Performs preventive maintenance, demand maintenance and alteration work on steam and hot water distribution system components including but not limited to piping, insulation, valves, expansion joints, seals, pressure reducing stations, pneumatic and electric motorized control components, steam & hot water appliances, chemical feed piping and pumps, radiators, coils, tube bundles and heat exchangers, sterilizers, steam traps, gauges, flow meters.
Performs preventive maintenance and repair work on condensate return piping systems, condensate isolating valves, check valves, steam traps, strainers, receivers and associated condensate pumping units, and flow meters.
Performs preventive maintenance and repair work on HVAC equipment relating to air handling units, air filters, humidifiers, heating and cooling coils, control valves, air dampers, hot water circulating pumps and air plenums.
Operates and maintains closed and open water loop systems such as hot water heating, and chilled and condenser water systems, including monitoring, adjusting and logging of control parameters plus the preventive maintenance and repair to distribution piping, pumps, valves, motorized and pneumatic control valves, chemical feed systems, heat exchangers, chillers and cooling towers.
Performs preventive maintenance and repairs on central sterilization and reprocessing (CSR) sterilizers including their electronic and mechanical controls by analyzing faults in equipment controls and components and making repairs and/or modifications as required. Seeks authorization from the immediate supervisor to requisition replacement parts and/or specialized contractor services from appropriate vendors as required
Performs preventive maintenance and repairs on steam/hot water appliances such as but not limited to glass washers, cage washers, stills, cart washers, pasteurizers and bed pan washers by analyzing faults in equipment controls and components and making repairs and/or modifications as required. Seeks authorization from the immediate supervisor to requisition replacement parts and/or specialized contractor services from appropriate vendors as required.
Performs preventive maintenance and repairs on medical air compressors/driers, medical vacuum pumps and their respective pipe distribution systems.
Performs preventive maintenance and repairs on all auxiliary power diesel generator engine sets and associated fuel oil storage and delivery equipment and provide necessary adjustments or repairs.
Performs preventive maintenance and repairs on instrument air compressors, air receivers, associated piping and their filtration systems.
Responds to daily trouble calls as received by the Department associated with above areas of responsibilities. Advises originator of resolution when completed or call status should a delay ensue. Communicates requirement for specialized resources to the immediate supervisor or manager.
Performs preventive maintenance work orders as generated by the computerized maintenance management system and assigned by the Steam and Mechanical Supervisor in all areas of responsibilities including documentation of historical information for each completed work order prior to submittal to maintenance clerk for work order close-out.
Provides vacation and sickness relief in Steam Generation Plant when required in the capacity of Assistant Shift Engineer.
Reads and interprets mechanical engineering drawings and specifications as they relate to the steam/mechanical disciplines with the view to provide feedback and recommendations to the Steam and Mechanical Supervisor on any system modifications or enhancements.
Maintains an inventory of supplies, equipment, and tools; evaluates/recommends purchase of same to the Steam and Mechanical Supervisor.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
