Description:
Reporting to the Engineer in Residence, the incumbent performs technical duties associated with departmental undergraduate and graduate Civil, Building and Environmental Engineering (BCEE) laboratories as assigned, with the fabrication, operation, instruction, and maintenance of equipment and experimental setups.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Maintain BCEE laboratory equipment and facilities, such as Structures, Geotechnical, Materials, Water resources, Surveying, Refrigeration and HVAC, Acoustics, Lighting, Solar and Wind tunnel.
- Lead the preparation, fabrication, installation, machining and testing of various components for teaching and research projects.
- Support and train the teaching assistants and researchers and focus on the critical issues in the laboratories operations and safety.
- Work in a team environment of professors, lab coordinators, staff, and students.
- Supervise and demonstrate the use of BCEE laboratory equipment to students.
- As a Safety Officer and Emergency Responder, instruct, supervise and monitor safety procedures for the BCEE laboratories.
- Work cooperatively with others to meet the changing requirements within the Department and Faculty, which may include additional duties and responsibilities.
- Conceive, design, fabricate and install new and specialized equipment.
- Researching and obtaining quotes for the purchasing of laboratory equipment & materials and making recommendations to the Department on such purchasing.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Diploma of Collegial studies (3-year technical program) in an area related to the primary responsibilities or a certificate of completion from an accredited Building/Mechanical/Civil Engineering Technology Institute or other related technical programs with a minimum of four years of relevant experience.
- Ability to interpret and correct engineering drawings and ability to solve complex technical problems.
- Understanding of building/mechanical/civil engineering terminology, laboratory process, and typical equipment; ability to use technical laboratory equipment.
- Sufficient experience in building/mechanical/civil engineering design and fabrication processes to demonstrate possession of the knowledge and abilities listed above.
- Prior work experience in building/mechanical/civil engineering laboratories is an asset.
- Good organization skills and ability to lift and carry out the maintenance and /or repair tools, equipment etc.
- Good knowledge (Level 4) spoken and written English to assist and instruct students; basic knowledge (Level 3) of spoken French.
- Good knowledge (Intermediated level) of Word and Excel to create and format documents and spreadsheets; experience in using email and ability to learn and adapt to new software as required (eg. Autocad, Revit, etc.).
- Ability to work flexible hours, evenings and occasional weekends.
- Physical ability to perform primary responsibilities attested by successful completion of medical evaluation to the University’s satisfaction (e.g. ability to lift, carry and move, equipment weighing up to 23 kg without assistance and up to 45 kg with assistance).
- Ability to differentiate between colors as attested by successful completion of a Color-Blind Test – Ishihara Plates.
- Will require use of respiratory protection and enrollment in the university’s Respiratory Protection Program.
- Will require use of hearing protection and enrollment in the university’s Hearing Conservation Program.
- Good knowledge of laboratory health and safety regulations, including WHMIS.
