Description:
This position performs work in the delivery of advice, support, outreach and emergency case management services to current and newly accepted international students with a particular emphasis on settlement and outreach on campus. This position provides culturally sensitive assessment of student needs and intervention services to those presenting with personal, academic, emotional, financial, mental health, and adjustment concerns.
Duties include: advising students who demonstrate personal, financial and academic issues; liaising with other services and resources within the university and/or agencies/programs in the community, as needed; attending meetings/visits with community partners and students off campus; coordinating the delivery of weekly programming with an aim towards student social participation, and organizing welcome and special events; monitoring, assessing, and responding to global events that may have an impact on international students at Memorial University; supervising undergraduate and graduate students during internship placements with the IO; carrying out activities and initiatives related to the Strategic initiatives of the unit, in area of intercultural training; and performing other related duties as required.
QUALIFICATION
Experience 1-3 years of post-secondary work experience or working in settlement for newcomers; graduation from university with a master's degree in counselling, psychology (Counselling), Social Work, a related field or any equivalent combination of experience and training. The ideal candidate will have: strong problem solving skills; a demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing with students, colleagues, referral sources, and the campus community; an ability to work with people from diverse linguistics and cultural backgrounds in the community and higher education settings; a high level of organizational and administrative skills, including the ability to meet deadlines and manage a varied workload in a busy environment. The successful candidate must be a team player with excellent interpersonal and inter-cultural communication skills; have experience developing and facilitating educational workshops and the ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously. Familiarity with the Internationalization Office as well various units and services offered across campus would be an asset.
