Intermediate Planner

 

Description:

The Intermediate Planner position will participate in and manage multi-disciplinary projects in urban and regional planning, growth management, and land development. Business development, including proposal preparation and client development, as well as mentoring and directing staff on projects, will be key responsibilities in this position. We are looking for leaders who can advance their own career and the depth of professional planning services we provide. Understanding of the Planning Act, and evolving trends in provincial policy, growth management, urban design/built form, natural heritage preservation, and resource management are required.

Responsibilities and Duties:

Planning and Urban Design

  • Perform advanced professional work related to a variety of planning assignments.
  • Prepare planning documents such as Planning Justification Reports and both Official Plan and Zoning By-law Amendments.
  • Manage complex municipal development applications.
  • Review and process official plan amendments, rezoning, plans of subdivision and site plans.
  • Act as a liaison between clients and approval authorities.

Project Management

  • Develop project budgets, lead proposals and verify contract expenditures.
  • Liaise with stakeholders to ensure completed work meets client expectations, jurisdiction standards and business unit standards.
  • Communicate internally regarding project status.
  • Lead and coordinate a multi-disciplinary team of subconsultants to meet clients’ timelines.

Business Development

  • Create and sustain a strong network in the business community.
  • Identify potential markets and trends.
  • Understand and provide solutions to your clients’ needs.
  • Participate in the preparation of proposals and other related business development activities.

Supervision

  • Ensure smooth workflow by delegating work to people with the proper skills and abilities.
  • Liaise with the team to ensure completed work meets or exceeds client expectations and department standards.
  • Ensure that all work put out is of a high quality to company standards.
  • Actively participate in a team environment; sharing your technical knowledge and learning from others.

Qualifications:

  • A degree in planning or related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience, preferably in a consulting environment or in a project management role in a public setting.
  • Eligibility as a full member of the Canadian Institute of Planners – MCIP, RPP designations.
  • Strong project management, report writing, and personal time management capabilities.
  • To succeed in this position you must be a highly motivated, flexible, enthusiastic, team player committed to providing high quality service to our clients. You must also be willing to engage with your project teams, and be prepared to mentor and guide other staff.
