Inclusive Recreation Camp Leader

 

Description:

The Recreation, Culture & Facilities Services Department of the City of Ottawa is dedicated to creating a healthy, inclusive, and vibrant community by providing residents and visitors access to recreational and cultural programs, events, and facilities.

As a Camp Leader in the Inclusive Recreation Unit, you will be responsible for daily camp activities working with children, youth, or adults with special needs in a therapeutic recreation or social skills development summer camp. You will provide direct support, care, program adaptations, and daily management of camp operations, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all participants.

Key Responsibilities:

✔ Plan and lead recreational activities tailored to individuals with special needs.
✔ Provide direct care, support, and supervision while maintaining staff-to-participant ratios.
✔ Adapt and modify programs to meet the unique needs of campers.
✔ Supervise and support camp staff in daily operations.
✔ Ensure safety and well-being of participants in various environments, including aquatic settings.
✔ Implement behavioral intervention strategies when required.
✔ Follow health, safety, and accessibility policies to provide an inclusive experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

📌 Post-secondary student – Completed at least two years in Recreation, Child & Youth Work, Kinesiology, or Physical Education.
📌 Minimum 2 years of experience in a related role.
📌 Valid First Aid, CPR, and AED certification.
📌 Training in crisis prevention/intervention.
📌 Knowledge of alternative communication systems (e.g., American Sign Language - ASL).
📌 Familiarity with child development and recreational programming.
📌 Experience in leadership roles within recreational programs.

✔ Ability to plan, deliver, and evaluate recreational programs.
✔ Experience working with children, youth, and adults with disabilities.
✔ Excellent problem-solving and conflict-resolution skills.
✔ Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
✔ Enthusiastic, reliable, patient, and passionate about inclusive recreation.
✔ Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Additional Information:

📌 Language Requirement: English and/or French. Some positions require fluency in both languages.
