Hospital Care Specialist

Reporting to Manager, SWO Region Base Hospital, the Pre-Hospital Care Specialist (PCS) is accountable for (in conjunction with the Regional Base Hospital Staff and Medical Directors) developing, facilitating and delivering educational opportunities for paramedics in Southwestern Ontario (up to 1500 paramedics), including certification of new paramedics and continuing medical education for a broad range of practice competencies and medical directives. Using measurement, established benchmarks and analysis of paramedic patient care activities; the PCS assures patient safety by evaluating performance, monitoring adherence to standards and facilitating improvements in care through remediation. The PCS will conduct investigations (to a professional bench mark) when necessary, on cases where care provided by a paramedic(s) has deviated from the accepted provincial standard. With educational, operational and clinical expertise, the PCS is a professional role model and resource person for paramedics of all levels and other members of the health care team in supporting the development of policies and procedures that promote evidence-based practice and improvements in patient care.

As the ideal candidate, you have:

  • Successful completion of an undergraduate degree in Paramedic, Adult Education, Nursing, RT, or as acceptable to Hospital
  • Successful completion of a two-year diploma in Paramedicine, or a related health field strongly preferred
  • Master's Degree preferred
  • Successful completion of ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support), BCLS (Basic Cardiac Life Support) and either ATLS (Advanced Trauma Life Support Course) or PALS (Paediatric Advance Life Support) is preferred
  • Minimum of four (4) years recent relevant clinical experience
  • Expertise in application of adult learning principles
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skill in program development, evaluation, and education
  • Evidence of proficiency in establishing effective interpersonal relationships, consensus building, conflict resolution, consultation and coaching/mentoring style of leadership
  • Excellent coaching skills/critiques development of staff/provides appropriate feedback
  • Expertise in critical thinking and clinical problem solving
  • Proficient computer skills - Microsoft Office Suite, accessing internet, literature searches, research methodology, etc.
  • Demonstrated practice and commitment to the principles of patient and family centered care
  • Demonstrated practice and commitment to patient and staff safety at LHSC
  • Demonstrated practice and commitment to LHSC's vision, purpose and values
  • Demonstrated ability to attend work on a regular basis
