Grid Modernization Engineer

The Engineer, Grid Modernization will play a key role in supporting the company's vision of "Building a Utility Reimagined" by ensuring the distribution system is robust, modern, and feasible.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform power system planning, modeling, and analysis for long-term, near-term, and operational planning

  • Ensure reliability, stability, and efficiency of existing and planned power systems

  • Develop solutions to address concerns and maintain compliance with applicable standards

  • Prepare load forecasts for Regional Planning with IESO and Hydro One

  • Support the preparation and execution of Maintenance and Capital Plans

  • Manage and coordinate station inspections, maintenance, repairs, and disposal

  • Coordinate the design, review, and testing of protection, control, and operational communication equipment/networks

  • Manage SCADA, OMS, and Engineering Analysis software

  • Support Operational Technology (OT) and Cybersecurity initiatives

  • Aid with the distribution automation devices life cycle

  • Support connection of Distributed Energy Resources (DER’s)

  • Validate outage entry records and prepare System Reliability Reports

  • Champion advancements in smart grid, microgrid, electrical vehicle charging, and more

  • Perform engineering and technical studies (e.g., long-term system plan, fault analysis)

  • Adhere to all safety rules, regulations, and Milton Hydro’s work practices

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to conduct complex engineering analysis on utility grids, renewable energy, energy efficiency, and storage

  • Experience with CYME or equivalent tools for power system analysis

  • Proficiency in GIS, ArcMap, and AutoCAD tools

  • Familiarity with grid automation, self-healing systems, advanced protection & controls, and DER integration

  • Strong written and oral presentation skills for technical and financial analysis

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, managing multiple priorities

Experience and Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering

  • P.Eng. designation or eligibility to register as a Professional Engineer in Ontario

  • At least 5 years’ experience in the distribution sector, with expertise in electric utility engineering, grid planning

  • Experience in grid innovation/modernization technologies, distribution system design, commissioning, and capital planning
