General Yard Laborer

Description:

Gerdau, a leading company in the scrap metal and recycling industry, is looking for entry-level Laborers to join our team. This role is ideal for individuals with no prior experience but a strong work ethic and a willingness to learn. The Laborer will assist in various daily operations, including scrap inspection, sorting, and yard maintenance while ensuring safety and efficiency.

Key Responsibilities:

✔ Follow all established safety, environmental, and routine procedures.
✔ Operate forklifts, loaders, and material handlers to assist in scrap sorting, loading, and unloading.
✔ Inspect incoming scrap materials for quality and environmental compliance.
✔ Identify and remove non-conforming objects (e.g., gas tanks, propane tanks, batteries, radioactive materials).
✔ Perform Routine Equipment Care (REC) and report any faulty equipment or hazards.
✔ Assist in non-ferrous sorting and processing as directed.
✔ Maintain a clean and organized work area.
✔ Provide excellent customer service.
✔ Work collaboratively to improve safety, efficiency, and profitability in the yard.

Additional Responsibilities (For Locations with Rail):

📌 Operate a locomotive and assist in shifting full and empty railcars.
📌 Activate switches, couple/uncouple cars, and set brakes as per standard procedures.

Preferred Qualifications:

📌 High School Education preferred (not required).
📌 Strong communication skills to ensure safety among co-workers, truck drivers, and contractors.
📌 Desire to learn new skills and grow within Gerdau.
📌 Ability to work in a physically demanding environment.
