Description:

Alectra, Canada’s largest municipally owned electric utility, is seeking an Engineer, Distributed Energy Solutions to support the development and implementation of cutting-edge renewable energy solutions. This role will involve technical analysis, engineering design, project interconnection, and regulatory compliance for projects such as wind energy systems, solar PV, energy storage, geothermal, microgrids, and combined heat & power plants.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Act as a technical expert in renewable energy generation and storage technologies, including wind, solar, battery storage, and microgrids.

  • Conduct technical analysis and preliminary design for distributed energy solutions.

  • Prepare electrical design drawings (site layouts, single line diagrams, network diagrams, cable schedules, etc.).

  • Perform power system studies (power flow, short circuit, arc flash hazard, stability, etc.).

  • Oversee project interconnection processes, including application submissions, reviewing study reports, and negotiating agreements with ISOs and utilities.

  • Provide technical input for various agreements (PPA, EPC, LTSA, supply contracts, etc.).

  • Ensure engineering oversight of contractor teams and technical staff throughout project phases.

  • Conduct engineering due diligence on shop drawings, study reports, testing, and commissioning reports.

  • Monitor and evaluate industry trends, new technologies, and regulatory changes impacting energy solutions.

  • Build and maintain strategic relationships with key stakeholders, including ISOs, utilities, suppliers, and contractors.

  • Represent Alectra in industry conferences and government workgroups to share expertise and build partnerships.

Qualifications & Skills:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering (postgraduate degree is an asset).

  • Registered member of Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO).

  • Strong technical knowledge of energy generation and storage systems.

  • Expertise in electrical transmission and distribution systems and industry regulations.

  • Proficiency in industry standards: IEEE, CSA, IEC, NERC, NESC, UL, NFPA.

  • Experience with power system software tools (CYME, ETAP, EASYPOWER, PSSE, PSCAD, PVsyst, AutoCAD, etc.).

Experience Required:

  • Minimum 5 years in engineering and interconnection of renewable energy systems.

  • Experience in electrical design, system studies, and utility interconnection applications.

  • Knowledge of energy project development, feasibility, design, construction, and operations.

Skills & Competencies:

  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.

  • Excellent presentation and communication abilities.

  • Proficiency in project leadership and budget management.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects within deadlines.

  • Strong collaboration and stakeholder engagement skills.
