Educational Assistant

 

Description:

In collaboration with the team, and under the direction of the Director of Programs & Services, the Educational Assistant is responsible for providing individual and group instructional assistance to participants of the program. This position requires the ability to assist youth in program training, developing skills, and supporting youth to remain focused on required tasks. The Educational Assistant assumes all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the philosophy, direction, and policy standards of Ndinawe.

Specific Accountability:

  • Establish and maintain positive relationships with youth that emphasize trust, respect, and confidentiality.
  • Assist with organizational tasks (photocopying, typing, etc.) and program preparation.
  • Maintain attendance records.
  • Facilitate group and program activities in collaboration with program facilitator or coordinator when requested; be prepared to facilitate if facilitator is unavailable/or unable to facilitate.
  • Develop material for youth to support their learning.
  • Engage youth in activities that promote learning and develop their skills.
  • Motivate and encourage participation.
  • Assist youth with gathering and organizing information and materials, meeting deadlines and training requirements, reviewing materials, and preparation, as assigned.
  • Assist youth in resolving interpersonal conflicts.
  • Establish positive and respectful relationships with youth and foster an effective learning environment.
  • Facilitate independence by reinforcing strategies to help develop problem solving skills.
  • Apply strategies to build youth self-confidence and promote independence.
  • Maintains positive relationships with external agencies for the purpose of referrals.
  • Reinforce an atmosphere of safety and respect.
  • Communicate effectively and respectfully, using language and tone appropriate to the situation.
  • Interact with staff in a manner that contributes to positive relationships.
  • Work collaboratively and cooperatively to support programming; offer individual and group support opportunities.
  • Identify work requirements and timelines from written and verbal instructions, asking for clarification as required.
  • Assemble, organize, collate, and construct materials according to facilitator direction.
  • Operate, maintain, and supervise youth use of specialized devices, equipment, and technologies, following safety requirements.
  • Performs other duties consistent with job description and approved Ndinawe services, personal policies and procedures.

Qualifications:

  • Education in relevant humanities/social development field or a combination of education, employment experience, personal experience and/or volunteer work.
  • Demonstrated excellence in communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Demonstrated reliability in time management.
  • Ability to establish relationships with youth.
  • Experience working with Indigenous people and possesses an understanding of Indigenous culture and spirituality.
  • Strong background working with people whose experiences include sexual exploitation, addictions, justice involvement, and trauma with knowledge and understanding of current and available community resources in these areas.
  • Positive, respectful, flexible in times of crisis and urgency.
  • Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities.
  • Subject to Criminal Record Check, Child Abuse Registry Check and Prior Contact Check.
  • Valid Class 5 Drivers License.
