Reporting to the Fire Marshal, the Deputy Fire Marshal (DFM) is responsible for the effective implementation of fire safety and prevention within structures and properties within Nunavut. The DFM assists in providing information, advice and guidance to owners, occupants, employers, employees, contractors, architects, engineers, and the general public (clients) as to the requirements of the Nunavut Fire Safety Act and Regulations (NFSA). The DFM will assist clients to facilitate the highest standard of fire and life safety within structures and properties. In conjunction with the Fire Marshal, the DFM ensures that inspections in structures and properties are carried out to verify that fire and life safety measures are provided to at least the minimum standard. The DFM shall assist the Fire Marshal in ensuring that full investigations are conducted into allegations of violations of the NFSA and will ensure appropriate compliance actions are taken if and when they are required. The DFM shall assist the Fire Marshal in ensuring that an investigation is to occur in the even of any fire or explosion to determine the cause, origin and contributing factors. In conjunction with the Fire Marshal, the DFM is responsible for verifying that the development of educational materials and the delivery of training meet the goals of the Fire Safety Act.
The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this job are usually obtained through the following: five (5) years’ experience in the fire service as a Fire Officer.

NFPA 1021 – Level 1, Fire Officer
NFPA 1001 – Level 2, Fire Fighter Professional Qualification
NFPA 1031 – Level 2, Fire Inspector
NFPA 1033 – Fire Investigator
NFPA 1035 – Level 1, Fire and Life Safety Educator
NFPA 1041 – Level 2, Fire Service Instructor
