Description:
The Controller will be a team leader, a cross functional collaborator, and a construction industry specialist that can lead the accounting department to a best-in-class standard of reporting, analysis, and compliance. As a key member of the leadership team, they will maintain all accounting and finance functions of the day-to-day operations of the company. The incumbent will oversee personnel in the accounting department.
Tasks and Responsibilities:
- Develop an interactive, collaborative, positive, performance driven and value-adding accounting and office administration team to support the achievement of the company’s goals and objectives.
- Safeguard assets and assure accurate and timely recording of all transactions by implementing disciplines of internal audits, controls and checks across all departments.
- Develop and maintain a documented system of procedures to ensure efficient operation (systems, processes and controls) of the accounting organization and accuracy of financial reporting.
- Recommend benchmarks against which to measure the performance of company operations.
- Achieve best in class by evaluating and improving systems, processes, and technologies for the department.
- Calculate and issue financial and operating metrics.
- Provide for a system of cost management reports.
- Assure financial plans are consistent with organizational goals.
- Ensure quality control over financial transactions and financial reporting. • Review of the accounting department and processes for efficiency and improvement.
- Manage the accuracy and productivity of the day-to-day activities of accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll, inventory integrity, fixed asset records, general & entity accounting, cost accounting, Human Resources, and Operations.
- Develop, improve and issue timely monthly financial statements and records.
- Coordinate, recommend and direct the preparation of budgets and outline budgeting schedules throughout the organization, including the collection, analysis and consolidation of financial data.
- Achieve budget goals through the monitoring of variances, summarizing of trends, investigation of budget deficiencies, scheduling of expenditures, taking of corrective actions and the reporting of material budgeting variances or expenditure variances to ownership.
- Ensure compliance with federal and provincial legal requirements in the preparation of regulatory reporting, corporate and tax filings. Prepare monthly HST filings. Co ordination of year end tax corporate filings with external accountants.
- Oversee and assess corporate fleet expenditures and expenses including owned and leased vehicles.
- Provide financial analyses as needed, in particular for capital investments, pricing decisions, and contract negotiations.
- Maintain and evaluate corporate insurance policies.
- Lead the preparation of year-end packages for the external accountants. Assembling and communicating all year-end information and working towards issuance of annual financial statements and corresponding during the year-end review process.
- Teamwork: Cross collaborating effectively within the organization and with stakeholders; a trusted leader within the company.
- Oversee compliance and administration of payroll and health benefits for our growing team of full-time team members.
Skills and Qualifications:
- 5 years + professional experience as a Controller in a private, General Contracting company.
- A post-secondary education in Accounting or Finance is required; CPA preferred
- A minimum of 5 years of experience in an accounting role within the construction industry is required.
- Strong computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite (especially Excel) required.
- A working knowledge of construction software such as Acumatica, Procore would be an asset.
- The ability to interpret business financials and financial matters and clearly communicate information based on these observations and interpretations to the owners on a regular basis.
