Description:

Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer, the Controller manages Pathwise Credit Union’s accounting operations, ensuring the institution's financial integrity is upheld. The Controller is responsible for preparing financial statements and regulatory reports, establishing a robust system of accounting records, and implementing comprehensive controls to mitigate risk and enhance the accuracy of financial reporting. Compliance with International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) and regulations from the Financial Services Regulatory Authority (FSRA) is also a key responsibility.


The Controller will play a pivotal role in the Finance team's strategic vision by providing value-added advisory services. They will lead the development of Finance talent, systems, and processes to meet the current and future needs of the Credit Union.


Position Responsibilities

Strategic Initiatives

Provide accounting policy analysis and operational accounting and financial system requirements for all enterprise-wide initiatives to achieve business objectives incorporated in the organization’s strategic plan including new or enhanced business lines and products, system and process enhancements, treasury asset and liability management, funding and hedging as well as capital raising activities
Lead the accounting and finance components of due diligence, deal closing, and post-closing integration work related to mergers and acquisition (M&A)
Assist the Accounting team in the development of organizational strategies by contributing accounting and financial information, analysis, and recommendations to strategic thinking and direction
Establish and execute functional objectives in line with organizational goals including the strategies for talent development and design the accounting functional system/process roadmap to meet current and future business demands and requirements
Identify, research, and recommend appropriate financial technology solutions and processes to build a scalable finance model


Accounting Operations, Financial Reporting, & Tax

Lead the daily, weekly and monthly production and reconciliation of accounting and financial data within the general ledger including loans and deposits subledgers
Manage all accounting sub processes including cash and investments, accounts payable, fixed assets, and project accounting
Oversee the monthly preparation of timely and accurate financial statements and reports that are appropriate for the users and in accordance with International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS)
Coordinate the preparation of the annual Strategic and Financial Plan, and provide ongoing management reporting, including budget to actual variance analysis and business line and product reporting
Manage the year-end close process and oversee the delivery of all supporting information for the corresponding year-end audit including the annual financial statements, note disclosures, Management Discussion & Analysis (MD&A), and all supporting worksheets/documents
Build, manage, and maintain a positive relationship with external auditors and ensure timely completion of deliverables for all applicable audits
Continuously monitor IFRS and FSRA releases to proactively prepare for future financial and regulatory reporting requirements; lead the evaluation and adoption of new accounting and regulatory reporting requirements
Build internal expertise to deal with complex accounting & reporting matters especially related to financial instruments (IFRS 9) including expected credit losses, securitization accounting, financial instrument classification, measurement, derecognition, and hedge accounting
Manage the risk and control environment related to the organization’s accounting operations including the development and ongoing maintenance of a documented system of relevant accounting policies and procedures and appropriate. segregation of duties and internal controls to provide financial data integrity
Supervise and review the preparation of all regulatory (FSRA) reporting requirements including all monthly information returns (MIRs) and annual information returns (AIRs) and ensure these are filed within the respective deadlines
Monitor changes or updates to Ontario and Canadian tax law to ensure Pathwise is compliant with tax reporting requirements; Ensure the timely and accurate preparation and filing of all corporate tax returns including corporate income tax, sales tax and applicable annual information returns

Implement and monitor adequate internal controls required to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and internal policies related to reporting.


Education Requirements  

CPA designation required
10+ years of related financial/accounting experience, ideally with a minimum of 5 years within a financial institution
