The Communications Advisor (Digital) is a collaborative planner and implementer who is responsible for the design, development, support and maintenance of websites, working closely with the Research Institute community at SickKids. This individual helps ensure that SickKids’ online presence reflects our mission, goals and objectives, and engages our key stakeholders.
Here's what you'll get to do:
- Work with Communications & Public Affairs, Information Management and Technology (IMT), and Research Information and Technology (Research IT) teams to ensure that sickkids.ca, Research Institute websites and the SickKids intranet are of the highest quality in terms of content, design, functionality, accessibility and value as primary communications tools meeting the needs of key audiences.
- Act as the initial point of contact for all digital communications projects for the Research Institute. Work with subject matter experts and staff to edit and advise on content development and website builds, with accessibility and design best practices, Search Engine Optimization (SEO), diverse audiences and user experience in mind.
- Manage the design, development, maintenance and support for existing and new WordPress websites.
- Support quality assurance for sickkids.ca, WordPress websites, as well as digital signage in the Peter Gilgan Centre for Research and Learning. Ensure the digital presence of the Research Institute (both external and internal) adheres to branding and content guidelines and accessibility requirements.
- Provide technical support and communications advice to internal web clients on the development or enhancement of assets to complement web content (such as page layouts, graphics).
- Support and advise on design of new pages, content types and features on sickkids.ca, as well as user management and quality assurance workflow (Episerver).
- Participate in development sprints and the testing, implementation and training phases of new tools, working with internal and external vendors as required.
- Foster a community of learning and support for content contributors who edit and manage pages on sickkids.ca and WordPress websites.
- Stay current on emerging digital trends and technologies and evaluate potential use case of new tools.
- Is aware of relevant Hospital policies and procedures and the impact of privacy, security and accessibility legislation on digital communications. This includes consulting on the development of new policies when necessary and reviewing/editing existing policies.
Here's what you'll need:
- A degree or diploma with a focus on digital communications, content strategy, marketing or proven relevant experience in a digital communications environment.
- One-to-three years of experience in the digital communications industry, with web-related experience. Experience in the non-profit or health-care environment is an asset.
- Experience with content management systems: WordPress (required), Episerver and Sharepoint is an asset.
- Knowledge of Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) is required. Experience in creating and maintaining AODA-compliant websites is an asset.
- Digital-first mindset. Familiarity with user experience (UX) design, Search Engine Optimization (SEO) principles and considerations for mobile design.
- Proofreading and/or content quality assurance experience and familiarity with Canadian Press style guide.
- Knowledge of Office 365, Adobe products and Mailchimp is an asset.
- Experience with Google Analytics and providing recommendations based on metrics.
- Working knowledge of HTML and familiarity with Figma and Invision is an asset.
- Aptitude for teaching/training others and fostering collaborative relationships.
- Excellent time management and organizational skills. Ability to work independently to determine day-to-day activities and to set work priorities.
- Strong web writing and editing skills.
- Demonstrated portfolio of web/digital design project.
