Description:

The Department of Civil Engineering in the Schulich School of Engineering invites applications for a Research Assistant. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

As a member of team, the Research Assistant reports to the Principle Investigator (PI) in the Department of Civil Engineering. The nature of work will be laboratory based, making and testing samples of mortar and concrete with a new supplementary cementitious material. The Research Assistant will be required to work between Monday and Friday 7 hours/day up to a maximum of 35 hours for the duration of the job, with optional flexible work hours that can be discussed. The work requires time spent in the laboratory, on the telephone, attendance at project team meetings, preparing reports and articles for publication and other project related activities.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Produce deliverables based on goals set-out by the project team, setting their own priorities and deadlines with weekly input from the project leads.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the impact of their work by being proactive about process improvements.
  • Tasks related to data collection, data analysis and visualization, literature reviews, and writing reports and academic papers.
  • Liaise with the research team and participate in relevant project team meetings and/or supervisor meetings.
  • Assist in project delivery: there will also be an opportunity to assist in mentoring graduate students

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Master's degree in Civil Engineering and a minimum 2-3 years experience in a research environment.
  • Experience with research processes including reporting and knowledge dissemination.
  • Experience using statistical analysis software.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal (interpersonal) and written.
  • Proficient with relevant software.
  • Ability to work on big-picture problems, multitask, time manage and prioritize tasks.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
  • Analytical reasoning skills and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to complete assigned and scheduled tasks under own initiative with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work with others in a team.
