Located along the Canada-US border, halfway between Vancouver and Calgary, School District No. 20 (Kootenay-Columbia) is situated on the traditional and unceded territories of the Ktunaxa, Secwépemc, Sinixt and Syilx. The Position:
Reporting to the Secretary Treasurer, the Assistant Manager of Accounting’s primary responsibilities include but are not limited to managing school level accounting; benefit administration; some district level accounting; some financial monitoring, reporting and analysis; and, providing backup to the Manager of Accounting during workload surges and absences.
Qualifications:
This position will appeal to an experienced individual interested in a detailed and challenging position. The successful candidate will possess superior interpersonal skills and have demonstrated organizational and planning abilities in addition to having:
University degree or College diploma in the field of accounting
CPA Payroll Compliance Practitioner certification
Minimum five years of related work experience, preferably in the public sector, a unionized environment, and/or a similarly complex environment
Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
Ability to manage several important priorities simultaneously
Exemplary work ethic, interpersonal and organizational skills
Self-motivated and self-directed
An in-depth working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
Strong knowledge and experience of Enterprise Recourse Planning (ERP) financial systems (i.e. . SDS)
Knowledge of Laserfiche, MyEd BC, and cashless schools’ software is preferred
Responsibilities
School Level Accounting
Provides input in developing and improving school/trust accounting procedures (includes ensuring the user manual is updated)
Provides technical support to the school administrative assistants in school accounting functions, and where needed, coaching and mentoring
Manages school level internal audit functions and ensures compliance to public sector accounting standards, Ministry of Education and Child Care guidelines and district policies
Benefit Administration
Efficient, accurate, compliant, and timely administration and reconciliation of the payroll benefits of all employee groups (approximately 750 District staff)
District Level Accounting Support
Responsible for District’s Accounts Receivables processes including PAD set up, collections, and reconciliations
Administers the district scholarship funds, coordinating schools, recipients, and donors
Reconciles staffing levels and expenditures for some special purpose funds (i.e. CEF, CLF), and upon request
Assists in other financial related duties as required
General Financial Monitoring and Analysis
Trains staff relating to specific SDS application modules
Supports preparation of Ministry of Education and Childcare data submissions.
