Description:
Reporting to the AVP, Global Accounting Policy, this position is responsible for the design and implementation of the Company’s Environmental, Social and Governance (“ESG”) financial reporting policy and processes. The position will work closely with teams including Global Sustainability, Investment, and Investor Relations, as well as various other stakeholders in delivering Manulife’s Sustainability disclosures. The incumbent must also possess a strong acumen for accounting advisory as this individual will be responsible for providing well researched, comprehensive and relevant accounting treatment on complex transactions, with a specific focus on IAS 28, IFRS 9, and IFRS 10.
Responsibilities:
- Review and provide recommendations on the appropriate accounting treatment for complex transactions from concept to execution
- Keep abreast of emerging accounting standards with respect to IFRS, US GAAP, and NAIC developments and changes in accounting requirements and assess its impact on the Company
- Document accounting guidance for new pronouncements in a timely manner and provide interpretation and implementation guidance to the relevant business units
- Review and draft annual MD&A by working with key stakeholders and senior executives to ensure the accuracy of our disclosures
- Design and assist in the implementation of robust ESG reporting processes with strong governance and effective controls across ESG related reporting activities and information in accordance with the Company’s standards
- Document policies and procedures related to ESG external reporting processes to ensure disclosures are current and relevant
- Review existing ESG related disclosures and perform relevant benchmarking analysis
- Initiate ongoing improvements to the ESG reporting processes by identifying, redesigning/streamlining and implementing critical processes to drive efficiency while ensuring control and accuracy
- Support the production of financial and management reporting requirements related to ESG matters
- Stay current on emerging trends and regulatory developments on new disclosure requirements, including ESG-related requirements, to inform decision-making and to make recommendations on adoption
- Support the Company’s participation in external forums, such as Accounting for Sustainability, in advancing industry’s sustainability accounting effort and sharing the Company’s progress
- Develop and maintain strong relationship within and across multiple businesses to promote collaborative and productive working environment
- Assist with broader work or accountabilities of Group Controllers as needed
Knowledge/Skills/Competencies/Education:
- CPA designation with 8+ years of relevant experience in accounting policy and reporting (ESG experience an asset)
- Strong technical background in IFRS, USGAAP, and/or NAIC is desirable
- Must be detailed oriented and quick to understand and apply new concepts
- Shown ability to work efficiently in diverse environments and cultures.
- Ability to efficiently communicate ideas and recommendations orally and in writing, and to listen and consider ideas of others
- Proven ability in leading process improvement or developing new reports
- Self-starter with the ability to work independently, particularly in the area of using sound, independent judgment, problem-solving and analytical skills.
